Phase 1 detoxification requires nutrients like Vitamins C, E, B Vitamins, and more.

Many organs are involved in detoxification processes. In the context of today’s post, it’s important to note we’re specifically talking about the liver. It’s not necessarily a “filter” like most people think (see my post about this), but a site where toxins essentially get neutralized in preparation for recycling or elimination.

There are two phases of detoxification. Phase 1 detoxification can get activated by compounds like alcohol, pesticides, medications, dioxins, etc. The body works to break them down into (usually) less harmful metabolites.

Phase 1 detoxification requires many vitamins and antioxidants, including:

Cytochrome P450 enzymes

Vitamin Ⓒ

Vitamin E

B Vitamins

Glutathione

Amino acids, including leucine, isoleucine, and valine

Some substances, like caffeine, will be ready for elimination after this phase. Most of the time, however, they’ll need to go through phase 2 until they’re ready.

Even though this is an overly simplified description of phase 1 detox, as you can already see, detoxification in general requires much more nutrition than a tea or green juice can provide. :) And this becomes more apparent when you learn about phase 2.

The ability to move toxins through both phases is key to efficiently and effectively getting rid of stuff you don’t want in your system. Stay tuned for my next post where we’ll talk about phase 2 detox.
