Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) Behave Like Estrogen in the Body

estrogen estrogen dominance pufas

We live in a PUFA-laden and estrogen dominant-world, baby. Think they’re connected? They sure are.
🔸
Polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) are estrogenic, which means that they act the way estrogen does, causing cells to uptake water and multiply at a rapid rate.
🔸
“The estrogen-promoting actions of soy oil apply to all of the commonly used polyunsaturated fatty acids. The same fatty acids that suppress thyroid function, have estrogenic effects.”
🔸
Both estrogen and PUFA potentiate (increase) each other to boot.
🔸
“The accumulation of the “essential fatty acids,” the polyunsaturated oils, in the tissues promotes the action of estrogen in a variety of ways, and this effect of diet tends to be cumulative, and to be self-accelerating.”
🔸
Estrogen and PUFAs are both excitotoxic, meaning they cause the overactivity of excitatory neurotransmitters, which can damage and kill nerves.
🔸
And it’s not just plant-based PUFAs. “The growth and metastasis of a variety of tumors are inhibited by saturated fatty acids, and increased by fish oil--as much as 10 times in number of metastases, 1000 times in size.”
🔸
Estrogens and PUFAs are so potent that “puberty occurs at an earlier age if estrogen is high, or if these oils are more abundant in the diet.”
🔸
What am I trying to get at?
🔸
While it’s impossible to have a diet completely void of PUFA, if you or someone you know is struggling hormonally and metabolically, it may be beneficial to minimize consumption.
🔸
SO:
🔸
Minimize use of PUFAs like canola, cottonseed, corn, soy, safflower, flax, peanut, sesame, vegetable, etc.
🔸
Minimize foods that contain them like mayo and processed foods — check the ingredient label!
🔸
Limit consumption of excess legumes, nuts, seeds and grains, which all have estrogenic effects too
🔸
Go for organic, grass-fed and pasture-raised when possible — otherwise animals are usually fed corn and soy, which inherently increased PUFA content
🔸
Rethink that fish oil supplement
🔸
Prioritize saturated fats like butter, tallow and ghee
🔸
Consider a high-quality Vitamin E supplement like @mitolife, which can be protective against estrogen and PUFA
