What Are Xenoestrogens?

Xenoestrogens are chemicals that mimic the action of estrogen in the body. There are many forms of chemical estrogens, including:
*
〰️Pesticides and herbicides: chemicals used in agriculture to kill insects, rodents, weeds and fungus (think glyphosate, RoundUp, Atrazine, etc)
〰️Phthalates: used to enhance durability and elasticity of products (think nail polish, hair spray, perfume, plastic wrap, etc)
〰️BPA: most commonly used in the production of plastic products (think can liners, plastic toys, etc)
〰️Triclosan, Parabens: synthetic compounds used to prevent the growth of bacteria (think makeup, $an1t1z3r, lotion, face wash, etc)
〰️Perfume: used in home and personal care products (think febreeze, scented candles, body sprays, etc)
〰️Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs): chemicals used to make pans non-stick (teflon, etc)
〰️PCBs: used as coolants, insulating fluids and plasticizer (think water tank coatings)
*
And while estrogen is essential, too much estrogen is not good.
*
Take the herbicide Atrazine, for example. You may be aware of the infamous research on frogs which demonstrated that “Atrazine-exposed males were both demasculinized (chemically castrated) and completely feminized as adults.” (PMID: 20194757)
*
Even at very low levels, these xenoestrogens have been shown to disrupt hormone levels in mama and baby. Many can be found in mama’s blood stream and amniotic fluid. And they also have connections to:
*
〰️Increased risk of preterm delivery
〰️Genital malformations
〰️Reproductive disruption of embryo
〰️Autism
〰️Decreased milk production
〰️Increased risk of miscarriage
〰️Decreased fertility
〰️Endometriosis
〰️PCOS
〰️Decreased semen quality
〰️Sperm epimutations
〰️Diabetes
〰️Cancer
*
In today’s world, it’s impossible to avoid these chemicals. But it is possible to minimize exposure. Does this mean go throw everything out? No. But you can replace products as you use them up.
