Why Am I Getting Grey Hair?

aging copper gray hair iron

It goes like this:
▪️
💇‍♀️You’re getting your hair done and your stylist notices you have more grey hairs than last time
💁Your partner is playing with your hair and starts calling you “Salt and Pep!”
🦱In the mirror you notice coarse, grey hair that doesn’t seem to want to play nice as you try to do your hair
▪️
When did this happen?!
▪️
Yes, grey hair is a quintessential part of aging. But it’s also a sign of copper deficiency, especially if you’re sprouting A LOT of grey hairs very quickly.
▪️
The color of your hair (skin and eyes too) is determined by melanin, which is a pigment that is produced by melanocytes in our bodies. The number of melanocytes is about the same in all people and differences in color are primarily due to the amount of pigment they produce.↔️
▪️
Melanin is created from a protein called tyrosine (also very important for thyroid function). In order for tyrosine to work correctly, it needs tyrosinase.🔄
▪️
As you’ve heard me talk about in my “Do You Think These Have Real Vitamin C?” post, tyrosinase is an enzyme that contains four COPPER atoms. In addition to supporting melanin production, it supports the development of important copper proteins.🔀
▪️
White hairs are most often associated with stress. Well guess what? When we’re stressed, we lose a whole boatload of copper. As a result, some of our hair loses its pigment and turns grey/white.😟
▪️
Things like iron supplements, ascorbic acid, zinc supplements, high-fructose corn syrup, glyphosate and others cause us to lose copper too.🧲
▪️
Avoiding the copper-depleting things above is a great start to putting the breaks on copper loss.
▪️
Several people have regained hair color after working with me on getting their copper levels up and focusing on regulating their iron.
▪️
How many grey hairs do you have?
