Anything That Suppresses Ovulation Will Suppress Your Metabolism Too

balancing hormones pregnancy

Ovulation has many benefits, one of them being that it increases the metabolism.
*
As I talked about in my last few posts, when we ovulate we produce progesterone, one of the most protective hormones we can make. Progesterone actually stimulates thyroid hormone. This is why our temperature rises after we ovulate, and why it’s such a great biomarker for tracking ovulation.
*
“Progesterone stimulates the ovaries and adrenals to produce progesterone, and it also activates the thyroid…” — Dr. Ray Peat
*
If we don’t ovulate, we don’t produce progesterone, which can cause a slow down in our metabolism. We also end up with an imbalanced progesterone-estrogen ratio. This drives estrogen dominance, which can slow down our metabolism further.
*
This is because estrogen blocks thyroid hormone secretion. But we also need thyroid hormone to get rid of estrogen. It’s a vicious cycle, unfortunately.
*
It’s also worth noting that the more estrogen we have, the more iron we absorb. And excess iron can also drive metabolic dysfunction.
*
Almost all types of hormonal birth control suppress ovulation (and no, a period on these is not a real one). Symptoms or not — there is still significant metabolic dysfunction happening while on these types of contraceptives.
*
The same thing could be said for any diet or lifestyle that suppresses ovulation. If we lose the ability to ovulate due to a stressful diet or lifestyle, our metabolic function decreases.
*
Where to go from here?
*
〰️Do your own research.
〰️Talk to your doctor about more natural forms of contraception.
〰️Rethink that restrictive diet or overly strenuous exercises routine.
〰️Employ stress management techniques.
*
Just some food for thought!

Not medical advice.
*
It’s important to note that adequate thyroid function is also needed to produce progesterone.*
