Can Birth Control Really Help You Regulate Your Hormones?

Ever hear that hormonal birth control (HBC) can “regulate your hormones”? My doctor told me this and I took it. But it was like trading 1 hormonal imbalance for 5-10 others.
🔸
HBC delivers a large dose of synthetic estrogen and progesterone (progestin). “This heightened daily dose of hormones suppresses the pituitary from releasing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which is how it prevents ovulation. The brain perceives there are more than enough hormones, so it diminishes the signal that would demand the body to make more (this is known as a negative feedback).” — Dr. Jolene Brighten
🔸
HBC doesn’t actually regulate your hormones, but cuts off the connection between your brain and your ovaries — that’s its job. Dr. Brighten says “As long as you’re on [it], your brain and ovaries aren’t talking, which can seriously affect all your hormones.
🔸
People, including doctors, are always saying that the pill essentially tricks the body into thinking it’s pregnant. Honestly, the body isn’t that stupid…Those pregnancy hormones are nothing like the synthetic hormones offered by the pill.”
🔸
Your cycle on HBC isn’t even close to your innate hormonal rhythm. Instead of natural fluctuations, hormones are completely flatlined with a steady dose of synthetic ones all cycle long.
🔸
And because HBC suppresses ovulation, we miss out on our most protective hormone — real progesterone. Not to mention, your testosterone, thyroid, cortisol and other hormones get thrown off...more later.
🔸
In my experience, using birth control to regulate hormones provided short-term symptom relief, but caused long term hormonal pain.
🔸
The reason I talk about birth control here isn’t to condemn or shame anyone who takes it...it’s to inform them of the various risks I wish I knew, so they at least know what they might be getting themselves into.
🔸
So, how can you regulate your hormones naturally?
🔸
〰️Work with a practitioner that can run the DUTCH test and interpret other hormone panels to see what’s really going on
〰️Eat a nutrient-dense, mineral-rich diet
〰️Balance blood sugar
〰️Prioritize sleep
〰️Prioritize daily sunlight
〰️Don’t over exercise
〰️Manage stress
