Do you need to take a Calcium supplement during pregnancy?

SHOULD YOU TAKE A CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT DURING PREGNANCY?

I honestly cannot make that call for you. But what I can share is a little bit about Calcium metabolism during pregnancy.

Your body’s absorption of Calcium actually doubles during pregnancy…naturally.

“Unlike many other nutrients, calcium needs do not increase during pregnancy. Also, most women obtain enough calcium from food alone.” Because “...calcium absorption in the intestines doubles during pregnancy.” — Lily Nichols, R.D.

*Of course we need Calcium for strong bones. But bones are actually made of several other minerals, including:

✨Potassium

✨Magnesium

✨Manganese

✨Silica

✨Iron

✨Zinc

✨Selenium

✨Boron

✨Phosphorous

✨Sulfur

✨Chromium

✨+many more trace minerals

❕Supplementing Calcium, just like supplementing anything else by itself, has the potential to create imbalances in the body. For example, too much Calcium can slow down thyroid function and make our cells more resistant to insulin.

*Food is a great way to get Calcium in the right forms and the right ratios. Animal sources will typically be best absorbed. Here are a few sources:

♢Milk

♢Yogurt

♢Skyr

♢Cheese

♢Cottage cheese

♢Bone broth

♢Sardines
