Do You Take Spironolactone for Acne, Hair Loss, PCOS, Weight Gain, etc?

Spironolactone is a high blood pressure medication. It’s actually a diuretic (makes you pee), and works by making your body retain potassium and excrete sodium. It does this by competing with a stress hormone called aldosterone, for receptors, which does the opposite — retains sodium and excretes potassium (increasing blood pressure + water retention).

Among other things, it blocks testosterone receptors, which can decrease androgens. Because of this, it’s used as an off-label treatment for common SYMPTOMS:

🩹Hormonal acne
🩹PCOS
🩹PMS
🩹Hirsutism (hair growth)

My dermatologist wanted me to take this for my cystic acne after coming off hormonal birth control. I declined. Why? Because my SYMPTOMS were NOT from a lack of Spironolactone. READ THAT AGAIN.

SYMPTOMS ≠ CAUSE

1. We lose sodium (+ magnesium) first when we’re stressed. If aldosterone is high, it means WE’RE LOW in SODIUM and we need MORE. Spironolactone makes us more deficient.
▪️
If the goal is to increase potassium because we’re low, our stress is more advanced (possibly hypothyroid) and need MORE too. Spironolactone retains it, which in excess can cause heart attacks and kidney damage. More stress.💥
▪️
2. If our androgens are high, it’s usually one or BOTH of these things: 1) excess estrogen and 2) hyperinsulinemia. Spironolactone increases our estrogen load AND a side effect is increased blood sugar, worsening these underlying issues.💥

3. One ingredient in Spironolactone is iron oxide...this is RUST. I’ve said this before, oxidized iron = rust = the start of every disease.💥

4. Studies show that it can actually increase testosterone and therefore is not a reliable way to tamp it down.💥
▪️
Unfortunately, Spironolactone is often prescribed to women already on birth control, multiplying risk factors.

Of course, there may be a time and place to use this medication. And acne can be debilitating (I've been there). But instead of slapping on another bandaid, why not replenish your body, heal your metabolism and lower overall stress? It might take more work and a little longer to see results, but there’s true freedom on the other side!🙌
