PUFAS, Diet, & Body Composition

fertility male pufas sperm health vitamin e

Before we dive in, know that this post comes from a place of genuine curiosity. By no means is my intention to create fear, but to bring awareness to and ask questions about the connections mentioned in this post. TIA!

You’ve seen them…those clear plastic bottles and jugs filled with light yellow liquid on the bottom shelves at the grocery store. Maybe they’re your go-to oils. Or maybe your once-in-a-while oils. But we’ve all eaten them at some point.

They’re industrialized oils. And with the continuing decline in not just our health, but our fertility, it has me wondering: Do these oils have anything to do with it?

Industrial oils are primarily PUFAs aka polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are fats with more than one (poly) double bond, making them the least stable of all types. They oxidize very easily, creating free radicals and inflammation.

Canola, safflower, cottonseed, rapeseed, vegetable, corn, etc. are all PUFAs. Their processing is very long and far from natural.

PUFAs are the kinds of fats most of us grew up eating. And what’s interesting is that with the increase of these fats into our food system, chronic diseases like diabetes have also increased.

The amount of PUFA in our diet correlates to the amount of PUFA in our body. PUFAs can create metabolic dysfunction and drive inflammation, which can create chronic disease.

PUFAs also deplete Vitamin E. And Vitamin E is essential to fertility (it’s also known as Fertility Factor X). Could the increase in PUFA consumption also play a role in decreasing sperm counts? Or increasing use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART)?

It could be a factor, but only time will tell. Still, there are many things we can do to proactively support our health and fertility, like swapping industrial oils for more stable ones:

∿Butter, ghee, coconut oil, tallow, olive oil, avocado oil, lard

And replenishing Vitamin E. My favorites are:

∿@mitolife PUFA Protect

∿@lifebludco Antidote

Promo code for both is INNATE.
