How to lower cholesterol naturally (hint: it’s not what you think!)

I’ve already talked about how only 20% of the cholesterol in your body comes from the diet. But what happens when we remove this small but mighty source coming from our diet?
*
The body may compensate by producing more.
*
‘When you do not eat cholesterol, your body sees this deprivation as a time of “crisis” or “famine.” During this famine, insulin activates an enzyme in your liver called HMG Co-A Reductase that begins to overproduce cholesterol.
*
Consuming excess carbohydrates, while decreasing cholesterol intake, guarantees a steady overproduction of cholesterol within the body.'
*
So what tells the body it can slow down its manufacture of cholesterol?
*
According to Dr. Diana Schwarzbein...eating cholesterol.
*
‘On the contrary, dietary cholesterol does not play a role in overproducing cholesterol in the liver. In fact, the only “low-cholesterol” diet you can go on is a diet rich in cholesterol. The only way to switch off the enzyme HMG Co-A Reductase is by eating a sufficient amount of dietary cholesterol. Eating dietary cholesterol signals the body that the time of crisis or famine is over. Dietary cholesterol blocks HMG Co-A Reductase. When HMG Co-A Reductase is blocked, cholesterol cannot be formed from sugar. In other words, the intake of dietary cholesterol stops the internal production of cholesterol.’
*
The action of cholesterol in blocking HMG Co-A Reductase is the same action that statin drugs take.
*
Of course, there can be other factors involved in high cholesterol, such as thyroid or nutrient deficiencies. But remember, cholesterol is not bad. We need it to make hormones.
*
Some food for thought!
