The Truth About Hyaluronic Acid

beauty minerals skin

In the body:

HA is considered a carbohydrate and molecular “goo.” It exists in the skin tissues, connective tissues, and synovial fluid that lubricates our joints. HA helps our body retain moisture. Larger HA particles seem to support immune function and wound healing, smaller ones seem to support anti-inflammation. Our HA production and molecule size declines and breakdown increases with age. This can potentially lead to things like fine lines, wrinkles, dry skin, age spots, and joint pain.

In skincare:

HA is considered a humectant (attracts water), used to pull water into the deep layers of the skin to increase moisture.

Some interesting tidbits about HA:

💨Many use HA incorrectly. In dry climates, the natural lack of moisture may cause HA to pull moisture from the deep layers of the skin — the opposite of the intended goal.

⚛️External HA may not work as well as the HA produced by the body. Synthetically-produced HA molecules may not be efficiently absorbed and are rapidly degraded on the skin surface.(Artemis)

🐟HA used to be extracted from rooster combs, but is now made by fermenting bacteria on tuna-viscera residue and mussel-processing wastewater.(Artemis)

❔HA is hypothesized to be involved in cancer acceleration, but more conclusive research needs to be done. (Pickart)
