Top 3 Morning Sickness Tips

Let’s be real...morning sickness SUCKS.

While it can sometimes feel like slow torture, you’re not alone.

Also known as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), morning sickness happens to 70-80% of women. (Bustos et al)

I truly feel for all of those warriors going through it right now. While the cause of morning sickness has yet to unveil itself, there are many factors thought to contribute to it manifesting.

This includes the natural, enormous increase in the production of hormones like estrogen and progesterone. My hunch is that it’s also the result of the body naturally shifting to an incredible state of anabolism (an energy-demanding state of growth and building) in the first half of pregnancy.

While there are also many things thought to help quell morning sickness, here are a few tips that have worked wonders for my pregnant clients:

⤳ When you can stomach food, try to balance macronutrients (protein, carb and fat) as best you can. If we’re only eating carbs - for example - when we have an appetite, this could send our blood sugar on a roller coaster and make us feel worse.

⤳ Try not to wait too long in between eating. Once my clients get their nausea under control, waiting too long in between meals brings back morning sickness every. Darn. Time. Providing a consistent fuel line, no matter how small the meal, can support the body’s tremendous anabolic output and keep nausea at bay.

⤳ When your appetite strikes, it’s definitely important to take advantage of it to try and get some calories and nutrients in. However, eating too large of a meal, overeating or binging can also make us nauseous too. Smaller, more frequent meals seem to be the way to keep the nausea gods happy.

Hopefully these tips help you kick morning sickness to the curb. Hang in there mama!

Of course, even though these tips have worked for the majority of my pregnant clients dealing with morning sickness, they’re not guaranteed to work for everyone.
