PREGNANT & CONSTIPATED?

digestion pregnancy

During pregnancy, our digestion naturally slows down. Because of this or even a few other factors (hormone changes, less room, etc.), we can experience constipation.

If you’re currently pregnant and struggling with constipation, feel free to explore these tips!

Hydrate (properly). Drinking “hungry water” can dehydrate us. Our digestive system needs water + electrolytes to stay properly hydrated, and for the migrating motor complex to function. I make sure to add adequate salt to my food, drink mineral-rich liquids like coconut water, juice, bone broth, and milk, and add mineral drops to my water and other liquids. My favorite mineral drops are @mitigatestress Master Mineral Drink (code INNATE provides a 10% discount).

Consume the right amount of fiber. To preface, everyone’s sweet spot is different. Too much fiber can stop us up. Too little can give us loose stools. But sometimes, a little extra fiber can be what we need to help keep things moving. My favorite way to add fiber to my diet is through carrots, carrot salads, raw and cooked fruits, and roots. See my video on the carrot salad for the recipe.

Get enough fat. In addition to minerals, we also need fat to help lubricate our system. My favorite way to get fat is through fatty cuts of meat and dairy. My other favorite ways are through avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, tallow and butter.

Move (and listen to your body). Physical activity is how we move our lymphatic system, which plays a huge role in regulating our fluid balance and detoxification. Our exercise doesn’t have to be crazy — even a 10 minute walk or stretching can be beneficial.

Add a probiotic. Bacterial balance (or lack thereof) can have an influence on our digestion too. My favorite is @mitolife Probiotic & Endotoxin Reducer (code INNATE provides a 15% discount).

Look at your supplements. Iron supplements are notorious for causing constipation. And so are Calcium supplements. Check out my other posts on supplementing these nutrients for more information.
